You are sitting on a nail.  I don’t like telling you about this situation.   But you are.

You are sitting on a nail.  

 

That nail is your money or your relationship with money.  In our economy everyone is sitting on a nail.  Ask yourself, what size is the nail I am sitting on?  Also ask yourself, “Am I aware of the invisible dependent in my home who is desperately needing me to recognize this?” 

 

Yes, there is a invisible dependent who needs YOU to start noticing the nail.

Some of us have become numb to it, some of us are scared to recognize the pain the nail is causing even if it returns day after day.  In fact up to 85% of us may not even plan to look at this nail (money and our relationship with money) until it becomes too much for us to bear.  

 

Here is Casey to tell us the statistics and also find out -- there may be good news in the future”.

Here is what scientific research shows us.

 15% of people are what are called possibility thinkers.  They see what is happening and start to move forward with a plan and then they implement the plan.

 These people are already on the move; learning financial literacy skills, researching the use of new unbiased tools, seeing empowerment and learning how to get money to serve them instead of being a slave to money. 

 

What about the other 85% of us?    Studies show that about 60% of people use what is called NECESSITY thinking and will probably not move until they see it “necessary”. 

Why?

Take a guess – in front of you is a piece of paper – answer the question on the next slide and then our next presenter, Jessica, will tell you if your guess is correct.

So how did you do with your speculation of why there are such a large number of Necessity thinkers?   Where did we learn this behavior?   Well if you answered it is a result of our ability to get things done under pressure and find success, you are correct.

However, with it, we have conditioned ourselves and don’t make substantial change until things are in close to what we might call the “crisis mode”. 

It is called PROCRASTINATION.  We end up with the habit because it worked for us. I am sitting in a classroom for a purpose.   It is where we learned this behavior.  We all learned this habit of thinking when we were young (remember the paper due in school we waited until the last minute to complete?)  And for most of us, this has been normal ever since.  It is the old NORMAL.

The problem is this old NORMAL may be the downfall of a full generation.  But there is some good news.  CASEY?

Yes there is good news and it has to do with how the old Normal is shifting.   The massive numbers of people known as baby boomers have common traits.  Members of the baby boomer generation pride themselves on being change agents  -- people in the forefront of what is happening.  They never want to be left behind. 

With advances in Technology and access to advanced problem solving tools, these baby boomers, and generations following them, are more likely to take charge. Baby boomers have created many paradigm shifts and now major shift is happening once again.   A  NEW paradigm IS emerging -- People are becoming empowered to make choices and act from a “NEW NORMAL”.

Baby boomers are on the forefront of that paradigm shift   - creating and learning ways to see money differently and listening to information (such as this program);

The question is, "Will it work?"

 

 

 “Casey, we are in a race of time.  The number of baby boomers is massive --over 77 million of us.  Some people believe if baby boomers  are to be seen in history as the great generation they imagined years ago, we will need to quickly move toward a “New Normal" way of thinking.

 If enough baby boomer necessity thinkers continue with an old NORMAL way of thinking, the retirement shortfall tsunami will define our generation. Necessity thinking won't work any longer.  It is a simple fact.  Baby boomers  have the most to lose. We are getting older and, while smarter and more tech savvy, we are aging.  We can’t pull the all-nighter to get ourselves out of a jam as easily as we once did. We can't work as we did in our 20s and never get sick.   Again, we all are sitting on a nail”.

 

 

 

 

 

 

SPEAKER: 

PRIOR TO WORKSHOP  -- under each person's seat tape a nail.   Also the speaker has small mirrors to pass out and also prepared handouts. (Nail can be lightly taped to bottom of chair or placed just under the chair before people come in) Nails are cheap so it will be a cheap prop

 

Handouts include handouts and a thank you note (and envelope with the WHEN-Score information with your handwritten code inside it).  The people will be writing a letter from their invisible dependent. 

 

Speaker starts

 

YOU ARE SITTING ON A ON A NAIL  -- literally,  look under your chairs and find the nail 

Please find your nail and place it in front of you.   Also take the piece of paper in front of you and write a score.  The score is your age - not the age you are now but the age you believe your financial resources will last given what you are doing today, how you are planning today, how long you will work and what you will spend. What would happen if you retired today.   Do you believe if you stopped working today, your resources would last 5 more years?  If you plan to retire today – you would add 5 years to your current age. Do you believe you will retire in 10 years, how long would your resources last (with a 90% probability) then.  Just take a guess.  You won't be sharing this number with anyone.  Just take a minute and take a guess.  There is no correct score.  But the score you are guessing is the age your financial resources will last given your plans today and what you are doing today.   Finish your addition and put the paper away.  It is yours to keep.  

 

Now let's look at the nail.  Because this nail is money or your relationship with money and this nail is what will allow you to either get a higher score  (have your money and resources last longer, or make it impossible for your to ever retire)  The greatest news is today is a new beginning no matter what that age (or your WHEN-Score is)  Is everyone finished?  Great.

Bob(Paul from the avatar piece)  in our intro states that you are sitting on a nail and also that you have an invisible dependent.  What is the purpose of looking at this nail?   It represents money or your relationship with money.  Sitting on a nail causes pain, in our economy, even if you don't think you are sitting on a nail, you probably are, because if we all don't work together on it, the relationship with money (or lack of it) will cause pain -- even for those who think they have it taken care of.  

 

You see, money, like a nail has a purpose and if you take it and make it do what is it supposed to do, it has nothing to do with pain. 

 

Now put down your nail and stand up.  _________ is passing out something – it is a mirror. Take one of these mirrors (note:  these are small mirrors that have been altered with gray on the top of the mirror image and slight lines all over the place.   It makes it a little fuzzy and no one looks good with lines running through their face. )

 

I want to introduce you to someone.  Look into the mirror, this is your invisible dependent in the year 2041 (use 30 years in future)  Looks the same, kind of little grayer, lines in the face but it surely is you. 

 

 

Now, put that mirror down and close your eyes.  THE YEAR IS 2041  See yourself (your invisible dependent) for real in 2041.  You know you are the same person -- just grayer and a bit older but inside, you are still the same. 

 

(while reading the next part of the presentation, speaker takes out a gray wig and puts it on so when they open their eyes again, you will have aged 30 years also)  

 

You have changed but only in physical appearance.  Keep your eyes closed.  It is the morning of  January 29, 2041._ and you are in your home and have just dressed for a meeting. You are standing in your foyer and feel the hardness of the floor under your feet.   (keep your eyes closed and imagine and feel the floor and that you are pleased that you are pleased to be in such a great place in your life).   In your pocket, are your glasses.  However these glasses have another use -- there is a switch on the side of these glasses that projects your computer screen and you type using your fingertips in the air.  See yourself reaching into your pocket to take out your glasses but suddenly, they tumble to the floor and shatter.  Darn,  you tell yourself, that will cost about 2 grand to replace – but more than that, you know you are out of touch with everyone until you get your replacement.  Well no time to figure that all out now, you need to get to your meeting.  In your driveway is your “smart car” that drives itself on your voice command.  You get in the car, speak the location and the car starts driving – your car takes care of everything you need.  But something is amiss -- a bug in the system? The driving is erratic and the next thing you know you are in a crumpled car in front of a tree.  You are not sure if you have injuries but you are calm and wait for help. Help comes and since you don't want to miss your meeting, they deliver you to this room – you make your way to your seat and stand .  Keep your eyes closed.  Know all is Take a deep breath, you made it. 

 

We are still in 2041 as I ask you to slowly open your eyes and only look at me  (not your neighbor or friends)  (they look and laugh because you have a gray wig on) 

 

 

Speaker says, "Wow, you are having quite a day, please sit down". 

 

Now look at the nail in front of you on the table.  Look at the nail you inherited from who was sitting in your seat 30 years ago. 

 

That person was a necessity thinker UNTIL THEY MET YOU and it was something that you said in a letter to them that shifter their perception about the nail.  What you said prompted them to become part of a movement -- be part of those involved in a paradigm shift, that changed your life.  

 

You want to thank them.   Thank them because they realized that the nail was money and their relationship with money.  

 

Pick up that nail -- feel it's energy.  They realized 30 years ago while holding this nail that it could cause pain or that they could use the nail (money and their relationship with money) to build a new relationship which lead to what you are experiencing today.   Because of their paradigm shift, you can feel calm in any situation and know all is well.

 

Yes, it is 2041 and in front of you is a piece of paper.  It is the message you will Write today:  January 29, 2041 that will make all the difference in the world.  Sit down, take the next 5 minutes and do the following.

 

After TO  write the name of the person who 30 years ago made the decision to make a shift  --- your first name

 

Date:  Today’s date is on the thank you note

 

 

After the words: FROM you invisible dependent, make a little mark or symbol, something that makes a difference to you  -- it could be your signature, or a happy face or anything you wish.  Just a small mark that shows you were here.

 

You see that the subject of this letter is I THANK YOU FOR TAKING ACTION On __(today’s date) 2011  circle the year – it was 30 years ago. 

 

Underline that sentence. 

 

Momentarily you will start   --  Remember it is 2041 and you are NO LONGER THE INVISIBLE DEPENDENT BUT THE TRUE DEPENDENT ON HOW THEY TOOK CARE ALL THOSE YEARS AGO.  AND THEY DID WELL – look at how well off you are today!!

 

Be sure to write whatever was important that you conveyed for this person to read so they knew that you appreciate how they took care and recognized you.  Tell them about your deep gratitude for who they are and what they did for you that allowed you to live in a place of financial peace and having great knowledge of the true wealth in your life.    Here are a few things that were in my letter as an example.   (put up on screen)  (I will leave you all in free thought -- which means just start writing and let it flow.  There is no right or wrong, just start writing as fast as you can to tell the person what you want them to know.  This is your chance to say what will be necessary to help them know you are on their side and are proud of who they are and what they are capable of doing.  

 

Here is what one person  wrote – (read aloud)   encourage to take notes if you wish:

 

Thank you for being brave.  Thank you for taking a look at reality – taking a look at both cash flow as well as debt.   Even when the story wasn’t ideal – when there weren’t a lot of resources to use and to save--you took a proactive approach to having immediate needs met AND to putting away something toward a comfortable future.  You could’ve had a more expensive car (a convertible!)but you decided to drive something less costly, so that you could invest for my future.  Thank you!

 

You were concerned about my having a place to live in the future.  You sacrificed so that I would have my needs met – in housing and food and clothes.  You wanted to leave a legacy so you took steps to ensure that the family property could be passed down to your boys – so that they could retain a part of the history you cherished.

 

 

 

Ok, now we are ready.  I ask everyone in the room to remain silent when they have completed their letter until the 5 minutes are up.    NO ONE WILL SEE YOUR LETTER and it will be mailed to you so it will arrive 30 years ago. 

 

Now are you ready?  REMEMBER IT IS 2041.  Start -- you have up to 5 minutes with your thoughts)

Shortly we will be putting your thank you note in the envelope. But first I want you to look at the other side of your note

 

One piece we will probably want to touch on is jumping in and the story of grasping the nettle. 

 

Here is the thing.  When you receive this 30 years in the past, you will want to be sure you act quickly.   If we just think about it, it won’t get done.   So here is the story of the Nettle.

 

Anyone here ever have a experience with a nettle?

 

(someone usually does and tells the story of running through the field and being scratched lightly by one) 

Discuss what happens.  It is painful.  Instead. Look at this story.

Grasp the nettle

Meaning

To tackle a difficult problem boldly.

Origin      This little figure of speech is known wherever Urtica Dioica, the Stinging Nettle, is commonplace, which covers most of the English-speaking world. The figurative advice to be bold and 'grasp the nettle' derives from the property of the plant to inject toxins into the skin of any person or animal who brushes against its stiff, hollow hairs. If the plant is grasped firmly, especially if that is done in the direction the hairs are growing, the hairs tend to be pushed flat and avoid penetrating the skin.

Nettles favour disturbed ground and consequently are often found near human habitation. Fortunately, the antidote to nettle stings is found in the leaves of Dock, which also grows on disturbed soil and is usually to be found near nettles.

The property of the plant was well enough known by the 16th century for John Lyly to have included a reference to it in Euphues, 1578:

"True it is Philautus that he which toucheth ye nettle tenderly, is soonest stoung."

Aaron Hill's Works, circa 1750, contains the first example that I can find that advises that a nettle be grasped:

"Tender-handed stroke a nettle, And it stings you, for your pains: Grasp it like a man of mettle, And it soft as silk remains."

 

 

 

So look one more time at your thank you note.  Is there something you left out?  What can you say to help your young self see that it is OK to get going, to take action – that they can get beyond their fear or any barrier that is stopping them..   And in a minute I will show them how they can do that -- an easy way they can start. 

 

But first, let’s take our thank you note and get it mailed to them.

 

Take the envelope and address it to your name and the location you lived thirty years ago.   (THE ADDRESS)  We will be mailing it to you directly after this workshop.

 

Now, Take the letter and put it in the envelope in front of you and close it.  You can add your nail if you wish or take it back to the past with you.

Take a deep breath, Speaker says:   Well now it is time to come back from the future.  (take off wig while saying this) 

 

 

Now open your eyes.  

 

WELCOME BACK  -- The person who just occupied your seat is sending you a letter but they wanted us to mail if for you.   YOU SEE, the cost of postage in 2041 is really, really high.     (everyone laughs)    COLLECT envelopes and mail them immediately after the workshop. 

 

Say hello to the person next to you and welcome them to the meeting.  Today is January 29th, 2011. 

 

Wow, what a trip, huh?  Take a moment and tell your neighbor what surprised you about your invisible dependent.

Take your nail as the symbol of money and your relationship with money.  You decide how to use it -- softly threading around it being afraid to look at your relationship with it-- trying to ignore it (but brushing up against it and having it cause pain at times) , or using it for the purpose it was designed for -- to help you build your wealth and serve your wealth. 

 

2. I leave you with knowledge about your invisible dependent.   And the symbol your precious letter that was written by him or her. When you read it at home please look at how wise you have become    ALSO, Please remember me to him or her when the time comes.
